Identifying Local Opportunities
1.)Dogs Patronize Gainesville restaurants, never pick up tab.
http://www.gainesville.com/article/20160121/ARTICLES/160129926/1003/NEWS?Title=Dogs-patronize-Gainesville-restaurants-never-pick-up-tab
The article describes the growing trend to allow dogs, and other animals, into diners here despite it being illegal under state law. It gets into anecdotal cases of pet loving, and possible repercussions of jumping the gun and letting dogs in before a permit is obtained.
The problem in the story is all the paperwork and money needed for a perfectly good dog to live it's life and eat in a fine dining establishment.
I think its the dogs. Sure the restaurants assume all of the risk and have to do all the work, but it's unfortunate that dogs cant just show up at chipotle and get a burrito.
2.)As Mexican frustrations rise, so does number of lynchings
http://www.tampabay.com/news/world/as-mexican-frustrations-rise-so-does-number-of-lynchings/2262560
The article speaks on lynchings carried out on two brothers who were conducting a survey in a town in mexico.
The problem is violence stemming from stereotypes and fear.
The Mexican people, and the brothers who were killed.
3.)St.Petersburg approves proposal that allows the rays to consider stadium sites outside the area.
http://www.tampabay.com/news/localgovernment/live-now-st-pete-city-council-discusses-rays-plan-at-special-meeting/2250870
This article is controversial around my hometown because people love having the option to go somewhere close and watch men hit a ball with a stick IN PERSON rather than from their home. The rays might be based elsewhere than tropicana and no one is ready for it
The problem is a franchise being given freedom to do what they want
The people of St.Petersburg are presented with the real problem since one of their beloved distractions may be moving away.
4.) Oscars Producer says Chris Rock is re-writing opening monologue
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/oscars-producer-chris-rock-rewriting-opening-monologue-amid/story?id=36485151
The problem presented in this article is that of the white washing of the Oscars. again. Chris Rock was initially expected to not speak amidst the controversy but instead has chosen the re write a speech. This'll be fun
The problem presented, or at least danced around, in this article is how the media doesnt want non whites to garner attention for their work
The people who suffer most from this are the kids of colour who watch these things and see no one that looks like them. No representation. That could really harm someones self esteem
5.)Disturbing images of the mold, mushrooms, and bullet holes in Detroit's schools that led to teachers' massive 'sickout'
http://www.businessinsider.com/detroit-public-schools-teachers-say-schools-are-unsafe-2016-1
The problem presented in this article are the deplorable conditions of school in Detroit. A group of teachers called in sick to draw attention to it, and it worked. The schools have mushrooms in classrooms, food that looks like it could kill, and just over all horrible conditions
The people who suffer the most from this are the kids who are subconsciously creating the framework for their whole life and have an environment that could kill them to do it in. Not only is it physically jarring in the moment but it could put insane stress on the parasympathetic nervous system in the long run.

Your 5 local opportunities were very interesting to read about. I particularly liked the first opportunity about dogs being able to eat in restaurants in Gainesville. I especially admired the title of the article, it is both a pun and an informative title. I agree that dogs should be allowed to be in restaurants, but passing state law to do so would cause some problem. ReplyDeletelol.
ReplyDeleteI really like your 5 local opportunities; they were indeed interesting and entertaining to read about.
For the longest time, I assumed people could take their dogs into restaurants--maybe it is just Boca where I saw that.
(But you are right; why can't they join us for a nice burrito?)
I think you have a very interesting and entertaining take on things.
For me, this assignment was hard, but after reading yours, it makes me want to redo this assignment all over again. xD
Check mine out if you ever get bored.
I really liked your blog post. It was well written and completely easy to understand and read.
I liked how you really thought deeply into the situation; it showed how much work you put into this assignment.
I also really love the organization you put into this; it is just very visually appealing to the eye.
Overall, I think you did a great job, and it makes me want to redo my whole blog post. xD

Hi Brian! You picked some interesting articles. I am from St. Pete and hear people voice their worries about the Rays' stadium situation all the time. I wonder if the NFL's decision to move two teams to Los Angeles will give the Rays any ideas for a big move out of the area. While I am not personally invested in this situation, I know a lot of people in the area have an opinion. Great choice of article.
